SYLLOGISM – A VERY IMPORTANT PORTION FOR NTA NET EXAMS. PART-3
Possibility Case and Complementary Pair
I) POSSIILITY CASE
Possibility comes when there is no definite conclusion. Also a definite conclusion cannot be made into a possibility.
We can take the possibilities by taking two entities C and D.
SOME STATEMENTS

There is no possibility from NO statements.
ALL STATEMENTS

SOME NOT STATEMENTS

II) COMPLEMENTARY-THE CASE OF EITHER/OR
Only in three cases prepositions become complementary. For two statements to become complementary, both of them need to be false. Then conclusion is either one of the them.

Exercise
1) Statement:
All Notebooks are Covers.
Some Covers are Pages.
Conclusion:
A: All Covers are Notebook.
B: No Notebook is Page.
C: Some Pages are Notebook.
Options
A) Only Conclusion A Follows
B) Only Conclusion B follows
C) Either Conclusion A or B follows
D) Either Conclusion B or C follows
E) None of these follows
Solution: D
Explanation-We cannot reverse All statement. So All Covers are notebook is false. Also No notebook is page is false since All + some is not possible. Also, Some pages are Notebook is also false. Here Both B and C are false and according to case 2 it is Some+No complementary pair-so the answer is either B or C.
The correct answer is option D.
